After a hectic day yesterday, it was a relaxed one today.
A trip to our favourite local cafe (so far), provided us with brunch (not early enough to be classed as breakfast) that was particularly colourful.
Well today was a pretty fun packed day.
It kicked off with a parkrun fix, where I snapped these two views on the way to the start.
I’m sure I’ll write a post about the skyneedle at some point.
A chat in the coffee shop, followed by a shower and a five minute walk found us at the local Mexican festival.
Absolutely packed with people, milling around stalls and food trucks.
It would have been rude not to partake of the taco selection available for lunch, wouldn’t it?
And the mexican wrestling display was a real crowd pleaser.
And because the day wasn’t yet over, it was time to get over to the Suncorp stadium to see my first Brisbane Broncos (rugby league) game.
Whilst I may not completely understand the game as yet, I do like the atmosphere. I mean who wouldn’t? There’s fireworks, and a horse mascot that parades the touchline when the Broncos score a try!
Like I said, fun packed day this one 🙂
The Brisbane festival is still in full swing, so we decided to have a scout around the outdoor festival area tonight, that promises food places, musical entertainment and a 3D chalk walk.
And by a chalk walk….it was actually just two locations…where artists have drawn huge chalk images on the ground, which when you stand on the provided little stand and look down through the suggested aperture, you do get a good 3D feel of the image.
I haven’t quite captured that in the photo….but you can get the idea, and see a very good chalk picture.
We sat and enjoyed a bit of the Friday evening vibe with music from the bar whilst enjoying the sunset views over the river.
And after such a strenuous evening (! cough, cough – any excuse!) some sustenance was required….so naturally to the food trucks we go.
And who could resist topped cronuts and donuts like these? (Hint: not me).
At the top of the stairs of South Brisbane train station is this decorative light. Or is it a lamp?
It’s in a style that I guess is meant to give the impression of being old or traditional.
I’m not sure it ever is actually used as a light source. Just a random feature at the top of the stairwell.
Thanks Queensland Rail for feeding my joy of random things to see and enjoy on a daily commute.
A few weeks ago I went to a free ballroom dance class. And whilst I found it very challenging, it was also lots of fun.
Circumstances on that night, meant at one point I was paired with the instructor, who did an amazing job of not getting frustrated or showing too much pain when I got the moves wrong….or indeed stood on his feet.
It was a pleasant surprise therefore when I stopped by the front yard of the QPAC (Queensland Performing Arts Centre) on my way to the cinema tonight, to find my instructor with more professional dancers showing how it should be done.
I’d recommend giving it a go, even if only once if you see an opportunity.
This beaten copper mural by an unknown artist apparently depicts the history of Brunswick Street from 1890 to 1970.
With New Farm on the left and Fortitude Valley on the right.
The plate says it was commissioned by the National Australia Bank in 1972, and it was displayed at the bank until the 1990’s.
Queensland Rail purchased it in 2004, which is why I guess it is now displayed on one of the platforms at Fortitude Valley railway station.
Shame it’s not possible to get a little closer to it, to see the details.
Another lunchtime meander, and another bit of street art discovered.
I clearly didn’t hang around for long enough, because I looked through one of those black rings, saw the street on the other side, took this picture, and a picture of the descriptive plate in the ground near it….without reading it.
That plate states the following:
“John Coleman
The Courier
1999
Stainless Steel
‘The Courier’ is an interactive artwork presenting news snippets from an early edition of The Moreton Bay Courier which was published near this site from 1851 to 1884.
Exploring ‘The Courier’ will reveal stories of the past and images of the present.”
Looks like I might need to revisit this particular piece of artwork and spend some time exploring it!
Today was a jam packed day.
We saw an AFL game at the Gabba, and actually got to walk across the turf afterwards.
Then the evening saw us at one of the events of the Brisbane festival: Rise for the Oceans.
I’ll leave it to the official publication to explain that: “Rise for the Oceans brought together a tremendous line-up of great Australians – Bernard Fanning, Tim Winton, William Barton, Katie Noonan, Jessica Watson among them – in a multi-arts celebration of the Great Barrier Reef, the oceans that surround us, and the 50th anniversary of the Australian Marine Conservation Society.”
A mixed bag of songs, music, talks, vidoes and on stage art.
But the photo for the day? This bug was spotted at some point in the day…..but I now can’t remember where! Could have been on the way to parkrun, but could easily have been at any other point. But it doesn’t really matter.
Two things spring to mind…..
1. Is it trying to ‘hide’ on this blue grout?
2. I have no idea what it is, and indeed whether it is something to be wary of.
I recently won a competition from a local publication, to attend a showing of the original The Great Gatsby at a local cinema.
Whilst not my go to movie style of choice, for me it falls in the category or classics I’ve never seen but probably should.
So tonight, we attended said showing ….. and were very pleasantly surprised to see that a dance group had been organised to do some film appropriate dancing in the seating area outside the cinema screen.
And as for the film….not sure I’d watch it again…..but oh such beautiful shirts 😉
